Eating Disorders and Anxiety

Research on anxiety and eating disorders indicates that an anxiety disorder often precedes the development of an eating disorder. Types of Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is a compulsion to eat, or avoid eating, which negatively affects both your physical and emotional health. Eating disorders can affect every part of your life, including work, school, relationships, day-to-day activities and your emotional well being. Eating disorders come in many different forms and your treatment will be tailored to your unique needs. Some common types of eating disorders include:

Bulimia – Bulimia involves binge eating and purging through vomiting, over-exercising or laxatives. Common side effects of bulimia are gastrointestinal problems and dental decay. People with bulimia are often at a normal body weight or a little bit overweight. You may have a mistaken belief that purging is helping you from getting fat. However, in reality, you are taking in more calories that you are purging. Bulimia is often accompanied by anxiety and depression, as are most of the eating disorders.

Anorexia – If you are anorexic, you may believe you are overweight even though your body weight is below normal. You may experience body image distortions and believe parts of your body, like your stomach or your thighs are too fat even though they are not. As anorexia advances, you may stop having your menstrual periods. In severe cases of anorexia, your weight may be so low that you experience severe health problems and need to be hospitalized.

Binge Eating – Binge eating disorder is characterized by a loss of control over eating. You may eat an excessive amount of food in a short time or graze all day long and be unable to stop thinking about food until you eat the food you are craving.

Night Eating – Some people don’t eat enough calories during the day and then overeat mainly in the evenings. At its worst, some people wake up in the middle of the night to eat.

Food Addiction – Food addictions vary but many people become addicted to sugary foods such as candy, ice cream, cake, cookies, frozen yogurt and other high calorie, sugary foods. Sometimes, in search of a sugar fix, people overeat low fat foods, mistakenly believing this isn’t as bad for them. People also develop addictions to carbohydrates such as bread, pretzels and chips. While these carbs may not taste sweet, they digest into glucose so it is equivalent to eating sugar.

Body Image Issues – An eating disorder often arises from a body image distortion such as in anorexia or it can cause body image issues with yo-yo dieting and the cycle of losing and regaining weight. Sometimes people are at a normal weight or even underweight and they still see themselves as fat. Other people complain about “feeling fat” or having a “fat day” when in reality they are comparing how they feel inside to how they think they look outside or to how others look outside.
