What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia is characterized by an inability to maintain a normal or healthy body weight (weight less than 85% of that expected), a relentless pursuit of thinness, a distortion of body image, an intense fear of gaining weight, a lack of menstruation among girls and women, and extremely disturbed eating behavior. You may view your body in an unrealistic way such as believing you are fat when actually you are underweight and placing a great deal of importance on your body weight and shape. Some people with anorexia lose weight by dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced vomiting, or misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas.
You may not fit the full criteria for anorexia but may still benefit from treatment. If you notice symptoms of anorexia, try to get help early in order to prevent getting this dangerous eating disorder.
Symptoms of Anorexia
- Inability to maintain a normal body weight as evidenced by significant weight loss or failure to make expected weight gains.
- Intense fear of gaining weight or getting fat.
- Distorted view of body shape.
- Restriction of diet to specific foods or specific number of calories.
- Purging behaviors, such as vomiting, laxative misuse, or excessive exercise.
Cognitive Behavioral Model of Anorexia
According to the cognitive behavioral model, anorexia is maintained by a combination of dysfunctional beliefs about eating, weight and body image and disturbance in eating and other self-care behaviors. People with anorexia often suffer from low self-esteem and may be more vulnerable to the influence of cultural ideals about outer beauty and perfection, leading to an overvaluing of weight and body shape. Your self-worth is determined by body shape and weight, leading to extreme eating and weight control behaviors aimed at achieving unrealistic beauty ideals. Issues with regulating emotions, extreme perfectionism, and problems with family and peers may also influence eating patterns and desires to stay thin.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for Anorexia
Cognitive behavior therapy for anorexia starts by focusing on the present problems that are maintaining your eating disorder. Your therapist will help you establish a healthy eating routine and self-care behaviors while helping you change your irrational beliefs about body image and food. The main components of cognitive behavioral treatment include education about nutrition and the eating disorder’s effect on the brain, mood and energy levels, normalization of eating and exercise behaviors, reduction/elimination of high risk behaviors such as bingeing and purging, cognitive restructuring, dealing with other issues related to the eating disorder, and relapse prevention. CBT will also focus on helping you effectively express your emotions, cope with stress, and communicate with family and friends.
Common Goals of CBT for Anorexia
- Uncover the triggers that lead to restrictive eating and unhealthy behaviors.
- Increase mindful eating behaviors.
- Reduce negative thoughts about food, weight, and body image.
- Develop healthy ways to cope with stress and anxiety.
- Increase positive emotions, self-acceptance and body image.
