What is Miscarriage Depression and Anxiety?
Most women experience a period of grief and depression after a miscarriage, which can include intense feelings of sadness, anxiety, crying spells, difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite and decreased concentration. You may be longing to be pregnant again or be fearful of experiencing another miscarriage. If you are experiencing significant anxiety, worry or depression or are noticing new problems in your relationship after a miscarriage, Cognitive Behavior Therapy may be able to help.

- Anger outbursts or irritability
- Withdrawal from family and friends and other social interactions
- Difficulty falling and staying asleep
- Feelings of shame, guilt and inadequacy
- Difficulty concentrating and making decisions

Cognitive Behavioral Model of Miscarriage Depression and Anxiety
Feelings of depression and intense anxiety are normal and understandable after a miscarriage, as with any loss. Unfortunately these feelings often lead us to isolate ourselves or use other negative coping mechanisms (e.g. excessive eating or drinking) that make anxiety and depression worse. From a cognitive behavioral perspective, depression and anxiety are thought to be maintained by negative and often unrealistic beliefs about yourself and your future. You may be very critical of yourself and perhaps blame yourself for the miscarriage. This type of thinking may then lead you to refrain from healthy and rewarding activities, including exercise, spending time outside your home, and accepting help from your support system, which then further increases feelings of depression and can intensify anxiety.
Cognitive Behavior Treatment of Miscarriage Anxiety and Depression
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) helps women struggling with depression and anxiety after a miscarriage to increase positive and fulfilling experiences, while also modifying negative and unrealistic thoughts and interpretations about themselves. You will be guided in monitoring your mood and the accompanying thoughts and behaviors, which will help you understand how negative thinking exacerbates depressed feelings and can lead to unhealthy coping. Your therapist will help you to evaluate negative thoughts and develop more realistic and helpful ways to think about your journey toward motherhood. Your therapist will also collaborate with you to increase your participation in fun and rewarding activities that will create periods of relief from your grief.
