What is an Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorder?

The obsessive–compulsive spectrum is a model of classifying various psychiatric and neurological conditions that appear to be related to obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). There are various conditions similar to OCD with the obsessive compulsive qualities of repetitive thoughts and behaviors. These disorders can also be viewed as being on a continuum from compulsivity to impulsivity, characterized by harm avoidance at the compulsive end and risk seeking at the impulsive end.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Repetitive thoughts, ideas, mental images, or impulses that you experience as intrusive, unwanted, and/or inappropriate followed by repetitive behaviors that you feel compelled to perform to try to avoid or decrease the associated anxiety or discomfort. The compulsions may temporarily reduce anxiety but are not effective in the long term and you often become anxious again when the triggers or thoughts return.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder – An obsession and/or preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in your appearance resulting in compulsive behaviors such as mirror checking, excessive makeup to hide the perceived flaw, excessive hair combing or cutting, plastic surgery and/or avoidance.
Hypochondriasis/Health Anxiety – Obsessive health-related concerns such as constantly thinking about your bodily sensations and symptoms and/or the fear of developing a serious medical condition, such as cancer, as well as compulsive behaviors to reduce fear such as reassurance seeking, internet research and frequent doctor visits.
Trichotillomania/hair pulling – Repeatedly pulling out your hair from any part of the body (head, eye lashes, eye brows, legs, arms or pubic area) for non-cosmetic reasons.
Dermatillomania/chronic skin picking – Compulsively picking of your skin to even out skin or to remove small irregularities such as pimples, moles or freckles to the point where it causes skin damage and/or scarring.
