Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline personality disorder is a pattern of instability in personal relationships, intense emotions, poor self-image and impulsivity. A person with borderline personality disorder may go to great lengths to avoid being abandoned, display inappropriate intense anger or have ongoing feelings of emptiness.
Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder
If you have borderline personality disorder or borderline traits, you may have some of the symptoms below. Full borderline personality is more rare and people usually come to therapy for help managing some of the traits.
• Unstable or fragile self-image
• Unstable and intense relationships
• Up and down moods, often as a reaction to interpersonal stress
• Impulsive and risky behavior, such as having unsafe sex, gambling or binge eating
• Past threats of suicide or extreme self-injury (see note below for this symptom)
• Intense fear of being alone or abandoned
• Ongoing feelings of emptiness
• Frequent, intense displays of anger
• Stress-related paranoia that comes and goes
Schema Therapy for Borderline Personality
Schema Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder is an integrative approach, founded on the principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy and then expanded to include techniques and concepts from other psychotherapies. Schema therapy for borderline personality can help you to change entrenched, self-defeating life patterns – or schemas — using cognitive, behavioral, and emotion-focused techniques. Schema therapy for borderline personality focuses on the relationship with the therapist, daily life outside of therapy, and the childhood experiences that led to the development of maladaptive schemas. Read more about schema therapy here.
Schema therapy does not treat Stage 1 of borderline personality. Schema therapy focuses on Stage 2 and beyond after any risks of suicidality or extreme self harm have been stabilized. For help with Stage 1 behaviors, we recommend a fully compliant dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) program. After completed DBT, then schema therapy would be appropriate.
